How to Stay Mentally Fit During The Pandemic

There’s no doubt about it, 2020 has been a tough year, and the pandemic that has in many ways defined the year has touched just about everyone on the planet in one way or another. With gyms closed and many people’s fitness routines upended, there’s been much talk of how to stay physically fit in such challenging times, but what about mental fitness? The team here at Hearfind thought we’d bring you a few tips to keep your mental fitness up, along with your physical fitness.

Make time to exercise. Wait, didn’t we say these tips were for mental fitness? Well, they are, and the fact of the matter is that exercise provides a big boost to mental health, not just physical health. Exercise also helps regulate and improve sleep, it can improve mood through the release of chemicals in the brain, and it can increase overall energy levels too.

Make time for friends and family. We may have to physically distance, but that doesn’t mean we can’t communicate. Despite the Zoom fatigue that we’re all feeling, human connection is more important now than ever, and extra effort should be made to stay in touch with those we love any way we can.

Find your personal rituals. It’s the smallest things that can make the biggest differences. Personal rituals, be they anything from an evening walk around the neighborhood to an afternoon cup of tea, can help us feel grounded and provide structure in an otherwise overwhelming time.

Making Long Distance Relationships Work During the Pandemic

With travel restrictions in place throughout most of the world, many couples already in long distance relationships have found themselves with the added challenge of not knowing when they’ll see each other next. Long distance relationships were difficult to begin with, so the team here at Hearfind thought we’d bring you these tips to make it work:

Be comfortable with being alone. Healthy relationships are built by healthy individuals, and before so much as embarking on a long distance relationship you will greatly benefit from finding a way to be comfortable by yourself. Long distance relationships will get lonely at times, after all.

Try to avoid excessive communication. Communication is of utmost importance in a relationship, but there can be too much of a good thing. Sometimes couples feel like they may have to make up for distance by communicating more frequently, but unfortunately, this often leads to one or both partners feeling smothered. Define needs and expectations, set schedules, and be flexible, but be sure to leave some individual time for each other as well.

Set some goals and timelines. It may be difficult to do in this day and age, but setting some dates when you’ll be able to see each other will give both you and your partner something to look forward to. The same can be said for steps in a relationship. Plans can change, but having a plan makes things easier.

Oprah Winfrey’s Secrets to Happiness

Is there any one true secret to happiness? Probably not, but Oprah Winfrey certainly has hers, and one of them is that nobody else is happier! That’s what she tells herself, at least.

“I don’t know anyone happier. I don’t know anyone who has a better life, or had a better life. I look at other people and I think, they look happy. But not as happy as me,” Winfrey told Vogue in a 2018 interview.

The key, here, isn’t that Oprah thinks she’s the happiest person around, it’s that she doesn’t compare herself to others, and doesn’t base her happiness on the standards of others. It’s part of a simple approach to happiness, one that includes occasionally doing “nothing” in the limited free time she has, her true guilty pleasure.

“I can go weeks and never turn on a television. I’ve gone a summer not having it on. No, my guilty pleasure is, I do nothing.”

For Oprah, happiness is about being grateful for what she has:

“I live in a very beautiful space that I created, and every time I leave home and I’m driving out the back with the pond and the ducks, and I’m looking at the grass and I see the house on the hill, I have this moment where I think about when Dorothy says in ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘I learnt I didn’t have to look further than my own back yard.’ Every time I think of that.

Most people don’t even know what makes them happy. But I can just sit on my porch and I’ll start reading a book and then realize, Okay, I’m not reading any more. I can just take it all in. I can just be.”

We think we could all benefit from Oprah’s secrets, and if nothing more, they’ll help us realize that happiness doesn’t have to be that hard.

The Inspiring Poem to Come From the Covid-19 Crisis

Dubbed "the poet laureate of the pandemic", retired teacher Kitty O'Meara from Madison, Wisconsin never expected to go viral. Yet her poem, "And the people stayed home," did exactly that. O'Meara, who recently worked in palliative care, told The Oprah Magazine that her poem was the result of an accumulation of months worth of anxiety surrounding the global pandemic, and says her poem “offers a story of how it could be, what we could do with this time." She posted the poem on her personal Facebook page and it has since been widely shared across the world via multiple platforms. The poem offers a message of hope for those struggling with the effects of the pandemic and resulting isolation.

The poem, "And the people stayed home" reads:

And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently.

And the people healed. And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal.

And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed.

The Case for the Malleable Morning Routine

Morning routines: Most people have them, and most of them vary from person to person. Some people like to get up early in the morning, setting their alarm clocks for the crack of dawn, others prefer to sleep in, often setting no alarm at all. Some like to start their day with exercise, others with a nice leisurely breakfast. Some people like to spend some time on themselves, taking the morning to read and relax, while others like to rush off and get straight to work. There’s no one morning routine that’s right for everyone, but is there even one specific morning routine that’s right for you? The answer, it can be argued, is no.

Keeping your morning routine malleable can help you adapt to whatever goal you’re working towards in the moment. Are you looking to get yourself into great shape? You can adapt your morning routine to exercise first thing in the morning or start with a healthy and nutritious breakfast, at least for a time. Have a major project to finish up at work? You can adapt your morning routine so that you get to work right away, at least until the project is done. The same goes for times where you find yourself in need of some rest and relaxation, you can always adapt your morning routine in order to start out slow and take some time for yourself.

Ultimately, the best morning routine is the routine that works best for you, and that may change regularly given your circumstances. The trick is to always be in tune with your own needs, and to adapt accordingly.

How to Beat the Mental Blocks to Happiness

We’re all on the road to finding happiness, one way or another, but sometimes we find roadblocks along the way. And sometimes, those roadblocks are of our own making. If you’re working towards something, odds are you may have come across one or more of these mental roadblocks, but don’t worry, we have tips on how to beat them.

Mental block #1 “I can’t do this.” Sometimes we face a mental block before we even get started, and that block comes in the form of self-doubt. We often think we’re not good enough, or simply can’t do something, but more often than not that’s not the case. To beat the “I can’t do this” mental block, start out slow, and if there are failures along the way think of each one as a stepping stone towards success.

Mental block # 2 “I don’t want to do this.” Once we get started, we may start wondering why we wanted to do something in the first place. Sometimes we even think we may have to do something, but don’t really want to do it. To beat this road block, it helps not to think of the task at hand, but the motivation behind it. Why are we doing it in the first place? The reminder is often enough to keep us going.

Mental block #3 “I’m not good at this.” Finally, while failures are only normal every once in a while, that doesn’t mean they don’t get to us, and leave us thinking we’re just not good at something. In times like these it helps to take a step back and look at overall progress. Sure, they may be slips and stumbles along the way, but there’s often an upward trend that gets overlooked.

Taking Care of Yourself. In Real Terms

Between your job, your family, your social life, your errands, your bills, and everything else you need to take care of on a daily basis, it can be all too easy to forget to take care of yourself. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are some real ways you can take care of yourself that you can start doing right away.

Focus on right now. Deadlines at work, an upcoming family dinner, that weekend getaway you were planning with friends or a loved one, it’s all too easy to let what’s to come dominate your thoughts and mental energy. The results? You feel tired, burnt out, unable to focus on the now. Making right now a priority, however, can help you clear them mental clutter, focus on what’s at hand, and ultimately feel better at the end of the day.

Get a good night’s sleep. You’ve heard it a thousand times before, and you’ll hear it again and again: good sleep is essential to good health, both physical and mental. Sleep is often the first thing we sacrifice when we’re busy, when it’s in fact the last thing we should do without. Aim for a solid eight hours of quality sleep every night, and you’ll find yourself feeling better as soon as the first day.

Stop and breathe. Finally, when you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to do nothing more than clear your thoughts and connect with your breath. Remember that not everything has to get done right now, and you can always take a few moments to take care of yourself.

Staying Happy Through Hiking

There’s no doubt that hiking through nature is good for our bodies; while it’s not too intense it’s nonetheless vigorous and can provide an excellent workout. Hiking, however, can also do a lot for our minds, especially when it comes to keeping us happy. Here are just a few of the many ways hiking can help keep us happy.

It keeps us connected to nature. The concrete jungles that many of us live in, filled with the noise and hustle of modern life, can sometimes leave us feeling stressed or disconnected. Hiking can take us out of that world and back into nature, strengthening the relationship to the natural world that helps keep so many of us happy.

It helps keep our minds sharp. While all exercise helps boost brain power thanks to extra oxygenation, hiking adds an element of navigation thanks to the required trail navigation. A sharp mind can lead to clearer thoughts, less stress, and ultimately, more happiness.

It can help build relationships. Solo hikes are definitely a good time, and often a much needed way to unwind and process your thoughts. Hiking with a friend or loved one is another option, however, one that leads to quality time with the people who are most important to you, strengthening bonds in the process. We all crave connection, and we can definitely reach it through a shared hike, leading to happy experiences and memories.

Don’t Buy Things, Buy Back Time

Many measure wealth in terms of money alone, the higher the number in the bank account, the wealthier they are. Others measure wealth in terms of material possessions: lavish homes, expensive cars, designer wardrobes, intricate jewelry, and the like. For many, however, the true measure of wealth isn’t the money you have or the material goods you can buy with it, it’s the time you can buy back with the money you have.

Just how does one put a price on time? Start with living expenses. Examine what you need to be comfortable vs. what you want. A significant difference between the two is the extra amount you have to earn on luxuries, which could be spent on buying back time. How does it work in real terms? Here are two examples:

Taking time off. With extra money in the bank saved from cutting down on extra expenses, you could cover your essentials for longer with the cash on hand, enabling you to take time off work.

Avoiding the tasks you don’t like to do. Don’t like spending time cleaning the house? Or maybe you don’t like taking the time to cook? With money saved from extra expenses you could spend more time dining out or hire someone to clean around the house.

How you spend your money is ultimately your choice, but it’s also up to you how much you value your time.

Is Happiness a Choice?

We all want to be happy, that goes without saying, but many of us feel like happiness is just out of our control. In fact, when talking about happiness, it's not uncommon to hear people say: “If I only had this I could be happy,” or, “If only that happened I could be happy.” But some, like The New York Times reporter John Leland, argue that happiness is a choice. Leland even wrote a book on the matter, entitled Happiness Is a Choice You Make: Lessons From a Year Among the Oldest Old. From an interview with Kiplinger.com, here’s what he had to say about happiness as a choice.

“You come to understand that the quality of our lives isn’t based in the events of our lives. It’s really in the reaction to the events in our lives. That’s a really useful thing, to realize “I don’t have control over some of the events in my life, like the weather, but I actively have a say in how I respond to the weather.” The title of the book is Happiness Is a Choice You Make, but the key word isn’t happiness. It’s choice. It’s declaring that you won’t be defined or determined by the circumstances of your life. You have a say in this. That declaration is liberating. That liberation is happiness. Happiness isn’t just the thing you choose; it’s the act of choosing it that makes you happy.”
